Commissioner's office for Childhood and regulation of nanny activities approved today at the Legislative Assembly

The legislative proposals submitted by the Regional Government for the creation of the Azores Commissioner's office for Childhood and the establishment of a legal scheme for the regulation of nanny activities were approved today at the Legislative Assembly.

During the parliamentary debate, the Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stressed that the Commissioner's office for Childhood "is clearly a key project in the assertion of Regional Autonomy as well as in the assumption of the constitutional responsibilities assigned to the Legislative Assembly."

Andreia Cardoso stressed that the Commissioner's office is a body dedicated to monitoring, evaluating and proposing improvements in the work developed by all those who work in the area of Childhood in the Region, insofar as it will also ensure the participation of all agents.

In addition to providing direct support and evaluating the work carried out in the archipelago, the Regional Secretary said the new structure will also play an important role in raising the community's awareness, not only for the rights of children but for the work of the commissions for the protection of children and youth.

The Legislative Assembly also approved today the proposal for Regional Legislative Decree establishing a universal legal scheme regulating the activities of nannies, comprising those working at day care as well as those who wish to pursue their activity on a private basis.

It also establishes the requirements for the exercise of the activity as well as the licensing and enforcement mechanisms to ensure children and families the same quality standards.

"With this option, we will not only improve the network of nanny services, extending these services to more households, while fostering the creation of self-employment," said the Regional Secretary.
