Angra do Heroísmo ,  February 25, 2016

Regional Government invests more than 14 thousand Euros in elementary schools through Regional Reading Plan

The Government of the Azores has equipped all regional schools with a set of 19 books as well as with a multibase materials package, representing an investment over 14 thousand Euros, announced the Regional Secretary for Education and Culture.

Avelino Meneses spoke in Angra do Heroísmo at the presentation of new Coordinating and Scientific commissions of the Regional Reading Plan (PRL). The government official stressed that books and reading "have become even more important" with the implementation of ProSucesso - Azores for Education, programme for the promotion of school success, in the school year 2015/2016.

The Secretary for Education stressed that the first ProSucesso action axis is precisely focused on "the quality of student learning." It is primarily aimed at "the promotion of reading and literacy, which involves reflection and understanding of printed multimodal or digital texts, and the most varied forms of written and oral expression and multimedia."

According to Avelino Meneses, the investment announced today took into account the fact that the programme for the promotion of school success in the Azores is "mainly focused" on basic education, especially in elementary school, where "the early detection and resolution of learning difficulties are crucial, before they become irrecoverable."

In this context, Avelino Meneses stressed that the inclusion of elementary school teachers in the Coordinating Commission of PRL, since "their students are the target audience of the actions for the promotion of literacy and reading." This body also includes representatives of the Regional Directorate for Culture, which is "justified by the work carried out by this department in the creation of reading audiences."

According to an order published today in the Official Journal, the Coordinating Commission of PRL, chaired by Lúcia Tavares Santos from the Regional Directorate for Education, is made up of the following members: Ana Faustino, Ana Fonseca, Catarina Azevedo, Filipa Magalhães, Madalena San-Bento, Paula Cabral, Paula Sousa Lima and Raquel Valadão.

The Scientific Commission is chaired by Manuel Tomás Costa and includes another two members, Maria João Cavaco and Víctor Rui Dores.

The Regional Secretary for Culture and Education expressed, on behalf of the Government, a "heartfelt thank you" to all those who "remain in these commissions and those who have joined them now."
