Government of the Azores supports recovery of sentry box of São Sebastião Fort on Faial

The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, will proceed with a project to recover the sentry box of São Sebastião Fort in Porto Pim, Faial Island.

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture visited today the site and was accompanied by the Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology and the President of the Village Council of Angústias.  The government official said the recovery of the sentry box will "contribute to the development" of that "historical and emblematic building" in Porto Pim bay.

Avelino Meneses also stressed the "tourist potential" of São Sebastião, recalling that this building is listed as classified heritage.

The recovery project will be drawn up by the Regional Directorate for Culture.

In turn, the Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated that the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Se Affairs, "has recently completed the coastal protection works" of that building, an intervention with a budget of about 100 thousand Euros.

"The intervention project was designed to have minimal impact on the landscape, but it will ensure the structural preservation of the base of the Fort's wall," said Fausto Brito e Abreu.

The São Sebastião Fort was built in the 17th century out of volcanic tuff extract from Monte da Guia. It was one of the few military buildings to be rebuilt around 1817, having served as a prison approximately until the end of World War II.
