Azorean Science Centres celebrate National Scientific Culture Day

The Government of the Azores, through the São Miguel, Faial and Terceira Science Centres, will join the celebrations of the National Scientific Culture Day on Sunday, November 24.

The National Scientific Culture Day was created with the purpose of celebrating the birthday of Rómulo de Carvalho, a distinguished professor of Physics and Chemistry, and disseminating his work in the promotion of scientific culture and the teaching of science.

The Azores Science Centres have promoted several scientific dissemination initiatives throughout the month of November, bringing people closer to experts from different scientific areas and allowing them to have contact with different areas of knowledge.

A workshop on migratory bird watching, conducted by Gerbrand Michielsen, will take place at Expolab in Lagoa on Saturday, November 23. The workshop includes a theoretical component and a field trip for bird watching.

On the same day, Expolab opens a photography exhibition titled "Aves dos Açores" (Birds of the Azores) by Carlos Ribeiro and Nuno Fonseca, who will attended the event to conduct a guided tour to the exhibition and provide further information.

The Furnas Microbial Observatory features an exhibition on the biodiversity of microscopic beings that inhabit thermal waters in the Azores. The Observatory organises several activities addressed at the discovery of microorganisms; admission will be free on Sunday.

The Santana Astronomical Observatory in Ribeira Grande opens on Friday from 9 PM to 11 PM for a night dedicated to planet Jupiter.

Participation in this activity is free. The event will also be attended by Nuno Sá, professor of Physics and researcher at the University of the Azores, who will address the dark spots and stripes found on Jupiter and its moons.

On Sunday, these Science Centres will take part in a dissemination session addressed at the population that will be held at Parque Atlântico Shopping Centre.

On Faial, the celebrations of the National Scientific Culture Day will be organised by the Azores Sea Observatory. Under this initiative, the documentary titled "José Bonifácio," directed by Francisco Manso, will be exhibited on Friday. This documentary addresses the History of Science and Politics in the early 19th century, being a joint initiative of Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School and the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores.

This same activity will take place on the island of São Miguel, with the collaboration of Expolab and the 9500 Film Society, as well as on the island of Terceira, with the support of Terceira Film Society and the Angra do Heroísmo Environmental Observatory.

The Angra do Heroísmo Environmental Observatory has promoted several themed weeks and Meeting Labs sessions throughout the month of November. The last sessions will be held from November 25 to 29; previous registration is required.
