Angra do Heroísmo ,  November 25, 2016

Azorean Government committed to building a "school in partnership," says Avelino Meneses

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture assured in Angra do Heroísmo that the Government of the Azores is "committed" to building a "school in partnership," stressing that "it is necessary to promote teamwork" for the benefit of education.

Avelino Meneses spoke Thursday at the 3rd Conference on Education "Let's Talk about Citizenship, Education and School," an initiative organised by the Parish Council of Sé. The government official defended that schools should have the ability to call "everyone to the difficult and stimulant task towards the promotion of academic and professional success among younger generations."

For the Regional Secretary, combating school failure and promoting academic success should be also "encouraged outside school walls" within a family and community context, but also "within political and social institutions."

In this context, he pointed out the need to develop "a teamwork" for the benefit of education, which requires "the hearing of students, teachers, technicians and school leaders as well as of parents, tutors and associations," namely municipalities.

In his speech, the Regional Secretary pointed out the ongoing development of a community intervention project designated as "Educational Success, School, Community, Family" within ProSucesso - Azores for Education. Under the scientific guidance of the Institute for Applied Psychology, the initiative will be implemented in the municipality of Lagoa.

This project is an initiative promoted by Lagoa City Council and the Regional Secretariats for Education and Culture and Social Solidarity. It aims to promote "the expectations of all parties involved in the improvement of social performance in the present and of employability in the future." Moreover, the project will also contribute to better educational results insofar as learning is "the best strategy to combat poverty and inequality."
