Avelino Meneses notes "positive signs" at the end of the first year of implementation of ProSucesso

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture revealed today that the integrated programme for the promotion of school success "ProSucesso - Azores for Education," based on an implementation strategy for a 10-year period, already shows "very positive signs at the end of the first year of implementation, which are quite promising."

Speaking at the end of a visit to Velas Basic Education School, Avelino Meneses stressed that "we cannot draw firm conclusions or make a definitive assessment" in this implementation phase.

In his visit to Velas Basic Education School, Avelino Meneses monitored two actions integrated in projects developed under ProSucesso. He was informed by the School Board that the students covered by projects focusing on the subjects of Portuguese and Math in the elementary level "are the main users of the school library."

Therefore, the Regional Secretary expressed conveyed his satisfaction with the changes in the behaviour of students involved, highlighting their enthusiasm with the new methodologies, as evidenced in the activities he monitored today.

For the Regional Secretary, "this means something" about the importance and value of ProSucesso in the respect for the autonomy of each institution and in the light of the general principles of the programme, which takes into "account the reality of each school, namely of its human resources. The project is being implemented in all school establishments of the Regional Education System."

Following the adoption of the ProSucesso programme in mid-September 2015, the Government of the Azores created a network of 50 specialised teachers in the identification, characterisation and resolution of learning difficulties in the elementary school level, designated as "Prof. DA," with the aim of making an early diagnosis of students' difficulties and defining a rapid intervention to overcome them.
