Francisco de Lacerda Museum reopens Church of Santa Bárbara das Manadas to the public on São Jorge
The church of Santa Bárbara das Manadas on the island of São Jorge reopens to the public on Tuesday, June 19, after being closed for a long time due to conservation and restoration works.
The intervention in the building, under the administration of Francisco de Lacerda Museum, was carried out by a specialised team. It focused on the restoration of the church ceiling as well as on repair works in the nave ceiling, main chapel and altar, and the respective tabernacle.
The Church of Santa Bárbara is a beautiful example of the Portuguese Baroque style in a religious building.
Its construction began in the 16th century and was completed in 1770. The church was classified as a National Public Interest Building in 1950.
The façade, sober and without great architectural details, does not give any hint to the richness of its interior, namely the excellence of its religious art.
This church may be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2 to 6 PM, and on Sundays between 1 and 6 PM; it is closed on Mondays.
