Carlos César presided, this morning, at the ceremony of signature and homologation of contracts for the financing, through the PROCOVERGÊNCIA operational program of the Azores, the construction of new installations of the University of the Azores.
 
The Oceanography and Fishing Department, in Horta, and the Angra do Heroísmo campus will be the beneficial areas - the first one with new and appropriate installations and the second with the construction of an inter-departmental building -, representing the works an investment of 11,1 million euros, of which 9,5 millions will be supported at lost capital.
 
For the president of the Government, the homologation of the contracts is inserted in the need of accompanying the emergence of new technologies and represents a very positive sign and advancement for the improvement of the conditions that are available for the University to better carry out its purposes and its objectives.
 
“Like days ago I had the opportunity for saying, in the presentation of the program of the X Government, other sectors surfaced where we look for new centralities or where, simply, we want to be included, as are those of the new technologies of communication, of the exploration of the space, of the investigation and use of sea resources, of the climatic observation, of the environmental diagnosis or of the protection of the biodiversity. In all these cases we find challenges that implicate careful attentions and interventions in the external plan to matter, in order that we signal ourselves and in order that we obtain positive returns, not only at the level of the European Union, where we are getting specialized support, as in other extents and places”, affirmed Carlos César.
 
It is in this way, he continued, that the Government is going to intensify the investment in the society of information and knowledge, through the reinforcement in unities of investigation and development that must promote the search with application in the Region, in the technological incorporation in the business powers, in the management of the natural resources, in the increase of the energetic autonomy, in the agriculture and in the economy connected with the sea.
 
“While celebrating these contracts, the Government reaffirms its constant intention of cooperating, till the limit of its competences and capacities, with the University, reckoning, also, with a active and creative posture so we can find new ways, new opportunities and other advantages of this fruitful understanding”, it added Carlos César.
 
Remembering that a few weeks ago there was presented the Azores Technological Park project - where it is hoped that the youngsters who are ending their academic training can find conditions to opt for the Azores to work and, with that, to contribute to a developed, modern and attractive region - the president of the Government concluded saying that, “with this public ceremony, the Regional Government shows its sense of collaboration with the Government of the Republic, which protects the superior teaching, and also decided commitment in the valorisation of the University.”
