The President of the Government, Carlos César was elected, by unanimity, President of the Islands Commissions of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) at the final session on Friday afternoon.
The Islands Commission is the oldest geographic commission CPMR and comprises the governments of 24 European islands, representing a total of approximately 13.5 million citizens from Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Integrated in an EU inter-regional body with over 160 regions, the Islands Commission aims to draw the attention of Member States and EU institutions for the specificities of European islands, to promote a decision-making process that takes into account the reality of the insular territories and to boost cooperation in matter of common interest.
Carlos César was elected on Friday afternoon at the final session of the 30th Annual Assembly of the Islands Commission, whose works have been developed under the theme “How can the islands take advantage of new opportunities in the context of sustainable development?”
This event was held in Ponta Delgada between May 20 and 21 at the invitation of the President of the Government of the Azores, and it is integrated in the programme of the “European region of the Year 2010.” The annual assembly brought together nearly some fifty participants, including presidents of the regions island, MEPs and representatives of the European Commission and several EU institutions and bodies.
