Angra do Heroísmo ,  September 27, 2016

Sérgio Ávila reveals there are 8,700 more Azorean workers than a year and a half ago

The Vice-President of the Government highlighted in Angra do Heroísmo the "absolute priority status" the Government has awarded to employment creation and the fight against unemployment during this term.

Sérgio Ávila spoke at the opening of the Regional Employment and Vocational Training Exhibition, which runs until September 29, highlighting recent data released by the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), an entity under the administration of the National Government. According to him, the Azores registered "the lowest number of registered unemployed of the last five years" in the last month.

For the Vice-President, this was possible because "there was an increase of 233 percent in job offers over the same period last year."

In his speech, he stressed that the data demonstrates "a consistent and sustainable path towards the reduction of unemployment." Currently, the Region registers "the lowest number of registered unemployed over the last 55 months."

"If these data encourage us, those released by the National Statistics Institute also show that the unemployment rate fell 39 percent from early 2015 until now," the Vice-President said, stressing that "today there are 8,700 more Azoreans workers than a year and a half ago."

Sérgio Ávila said "this path also had a particular relevance on Terceira Island," where "there are 25% fewer unemployed in the end August compared to early 2015, i.e., 670 fewer unemployed on Terceira than a year and a half ago."

"Our concern is not with the 8,700 Azoreans who have found jobs, but with the 9,770 Azoreans who are still unemployed and registered in employment centres," the government official said, stressing that is for those that we must "combine all our energy and all our strength."

For the Vice-President, the response involves the strengthening of the path we have been following so far, "a path that is based on the increase of private economic activity" even though, as he revealed, the Economic Activity Index is "has been rising for 22 consecutive months" at a rate over four percent in some of these months.

"I would also like to announce that public investment implemented by the end of August increased 36 percent over the first eight months of last year," said Sérgio Ávila. He revealed that "private investment, measured by effectively implemented incentive systems, grew more than double" compared to the same period of last year.

In this regard, the Vice-President conveyed the belief that "there will still be an increase in job offers," considering, nevertheless, that "is crucial to improve qualifications and training, whether initial training or training of workers."

In this regard, Sérgio Ávila revealed that the Regional Government invested 21.6 million Euros in vocational training in the past legislative period, supporting 1,237 training courses that cover more than 15 thousand Azoreans.

Moreover, the INTEGRA and PIIE programmes, which are intended to support the hiring of trainees by companies, have helped 4,000 Azoreans to find a job and, thus, contributed to their integration into the labour market.

"This is the path to be followed," the Vice-President said, praising the work carried out by Regional Directorate for Employment and Vocational Training, led by Ilda Baptista, over the past four years.

"The results are quite evident with the unprecedented reduction in unemployment and the consistent increase of employment. They are the result of the merits of all those working in this Regional Directorate," said Sérgio Ávila.

The Vice-President also offered "a word of hope in the recovery and continued growth of employment and reduction of unemployment," reiterating that "while there is an unemployed Azorean we will not rest until we find a solution."
