Angra do Heroísmo ,  September 06, 2016

Low cost flights on Terceira to have significant impact on the island's economy, says Sérgio Ávila

The Vice-President of the Government highlighted in Angra do Heroism the "fulfilment of a commitment taken in April" that has led to the announcement made today regarding low cost flights between Mainland Portugal and Lajes Airport, which are due to start in December.

Sérgio Ávila spoke at a press conference for the presentation of flight programme, operated by Ryanair, adding that the decision consolidates one of the measures provided for in the Economic Revitalisation Plan for Terceira Island (PREIT). According to him, the goal should be embodied in "the revitalisation of tourism as an essential factor in wealth creation, development of the island and job creation."

The Vice-President stressed that "this task has been carried out, through the introduction of flights departing from the United States, Germany and Spain, which resulted in a growth of 100 percent" of tourism on Terceira Island. In this regard, low cost flight will strengthen the development of this destination.

For Sérgio Ávila, the successful conclusion of the process that led to the arrival of low cost flights to Terceira was due to "just work, work, and work."

"We had a clear choice to develop this process without speaking, doing without talking," stressed the Vice-President. The government official emphasised that the Azorean Government had the collaboration of "Ryanair and the National Government, through Prime Minister António Costa," recalling that this goal was awarded priority status in April.

Sérgio Ávila revealed that "since then, we have solved some issues and overcome a wide range of obstacles. This was only possible due to the joint work of the Regional Government and the National Government, which worked for this to happen. Moreover, the government official also highlighted the "relevant" efforts undertaken by the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Transport, led by Vítor Fraga.

In his speech, the Vice-President expressed his belief that, from December, the beginning of flights will have "a significant impact" on economic activity, wealth generation and job creation.

"We have enormous potential ahead of us," the government said, pointing out that the qualification of services and the development of new services and products" has contributed to "this significant increase in demand for the Azores destination, including the island of Terceira."

Sérgio Ávila noted, incidentally, that the Azores "are growing at this time three times more than the national average, while the island of Terceira grows 10 times more than the national average," thus reiterating the idea that there is still "a very significant potential for growth."

"As a reflex of this climate of trust and hope in the future, we have already approved four new hotels on Terceira, whose works will start very quickly," said the Vice-President.

For Sérgio Ávila, "this is, therefore, an extremely important day for a future of trust and hope and also represents the conclusion of an extremely hard and intense effort that we have all undertaken over the past months."

"Being here today is not the end of a process," the Vice-President said, stressing this is "the beginning of a development process we want to consolidate, reaffirming and consolidating tourism as a fundamental step in the development of Terceira Island, as we had defined in PREIT."
