Regional Government promotes 1st Children's and Youth Azores Handicrafts Festival - Roots

The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Center for Crafts (CRAA) promotes the 1st Children's and Youth Azores Handicrafts - Roots between May 3 and 5.
 
This pioneering initiative stemmed from Roots - Educational Azores Handicrafts Project and is primarily intended to raise the awareness of younger audiences for the importance of know-how. In this regard, CRAA intends to disseminate traditional techniques and raw materials as well as creative and innovative experimentation of new forms of crafting so that young people can disseminate the traditions and cultural heritage of their communities.
 
In this first edition, the festival's programme, besides the commercial component, includes workshops, concerts with commentaries and a puppet show. It will feature performances by Rafael Carvalho, Teatro Historioscopio and Teatro Marionetas groups, and Alma d'Arame Association.
 
The festival will take place at the CRAA facilities. There will also be an outdoor area where youngsters will have at their disposal toys, traditional games and healthy snacks.
 
On the first day of the event, May 3, there are planned initiative for school audiences, namely handicraft demonstrations, a "viola da terra" (traditional Azorean guitar) concert with commentaries and a puppet show.
 
The "Special Azores in Box" will be also featured in the festival, a showcase and sale of traditional and contemporary toys from various islands of the archipelago. It may be visited from 10 AM to 6 PM on May 3, from 9:30 AM to 8 PM on the following day and from 2 to 8 PM on May 5.
 
In the context of Roots - Educational Azores Handicrafts Project, there will several workshops on breadmaking, clay modelling, wooden toys, basketwork, corn husk dolls and rag dolls. Those who are interested should register by telephone 296 309 100 or at the email [email protected].
 
The 1st Children's and Youth Azores Handicrafts Festival - Roots will be open to the public on May 3 from 10 AM to 3 PM and on May 4 and 5 from 2 to 8 PM; admission is free.
