Regional Centre for Handicrafts promotes "Patchwork - an approach to Azorean patchwork"

The Vice-Presidency of the Government, through the Regional Centre for Handicrafts (CRAA), opens an unprecedented exhibition entitled "Patchwork - an approach to Azorean patchwork" at the Franciscan Convent in Lagoa on November 17 at 6:30 PM.

This exhibition, which will be open until December 30, aims to disseminate not only the works belonging to individuals and collective entities from several islands of the archipelago, but also the various techniques used in this type of craftwork.

The art of patchwork is a form of craftwork in which several pieces of fabric are sewn together, creating various types of designs or patterns. It continues to expand in the Azores, through various techniques that are passed on from generation to generation.

Blankets, carpets, teapot covers, sacks, decorative panels and many other pieces will be on public display for the first time. They reflect an art mastered by woman as well as the inherited knowledge and shared experiences transferred to the universe of textiles.

The works in exhibition belong to the ethnographic collection of CRAA, regional museums, artisans and some families. These pieces tell stories in space and time that are now featured in the exhibition's catalogue.

The exhibition may be visited from Tuesday to Friday from 10 AM to 1:30 PM and 2:30 to 6:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. It will include guided tours and workshops conducted by local artisans.

"Patchwork - an approach to Azorean patchwork" will be also featured at the Azores Handicrafts Festival - PRENDA. The event takes place at "Pavilhão do Mar" in Ponta Delgada between November 23 and 26 and at Angra do Heroísmo Museum in January.
