Vítor Fraga ensures that security forces may continue to rely on the Government's support

The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works restated today the Government's availability to continue cooperating with security forces in the archipelago, highlighting the importance of their work for the benefit and well-being of Azorean population.

Vítor Fraga spoke during the transfer ceremony of computer equipment to PSP (Public Security Police), amounting to 57 thousand Euros. The government official stated that, despite the acquisition of equipment for these forces is a responsibility of the State, the Government of the Azores "believes it should also support and collaborate, as much as possible," so that these forces may perform their duties "in an increasingly effective manner."

In this regard, the Regional Secretary recalled that the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Land Transport Fund, "signed with the PSP various agreements for the implementation of investment projects, representing an amount that already surpasses 1.1 million Euros. The amount results from the allocation of 30% of the amount of fines on offences committed in the Region.

The allocation of these funds has allowed the delivery of 45 vehicles with different purposes to PSP. Furthermore, the Government has also delivered computer equipment, including 90 computers and screens, 22 laptops, 11 printers and 29 scanners as well as several follow-up and surveillance material for criminal investigation.

"Taking into consideration that the needs in terms of equipment are still a reality, we have proceeded to the delivery of computer equipment worth 57 thousand Euros, including a set composed of 69 computers and respective monitors, four laptops, 12 printers, four scanners and two external disks," said the government official.

Vítor Fraga also announced a new investment in active road safety, complementing those already announced with regard to road surface markings on all islands, which will be carried out later this year.

"This investment provides for changes in the traffic light system on regional roads to LED technology powered by renewable energy, including the use of solar panels," said the Secretary for Transport.

"Likewise, we will develop a new prevention light signalling system, also powered by renewable energy, which is designed to indicate proximity to pedestrian crossings and roundabouts, and identify dangerous curves," added Victor Fraga.

In his speech, the Regional Secretary assured that PSP and GNR (National Republican Guard) may "continue to rely" on the support of the Regional Government as the purpose of these security forces is the same of the Government, that is, "serve the population of the archipelago in the best possible way."

"I am sure that, within the reach of our possibilities, we enhanced the operational capacity of PSP. Despite some shortages in terms of human resources available in the Region, this security force has provided, selflessly, an excellent service in maintaining security and also contributed to the external recognition of the Azores as a safe region," said Vítor Fraga.
