Praia da Vitória ,  October 22, 2015

Vítor Fraga announces investment of 22 million Euros in renewable energy for 2016

The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport announced today that the Regional Government will invest in 2016 more than 22 million Euros in renewable energy, thus consolidating energy policy that is being implemented by the Regional Government.

During the ceremony to lay the first stone of Pico Alto Geothermal Plant, which he presided over on behalf of the President of the Government, Vítor Fraga announced that next year, "the Government will invest more than 22 million Euros to harness the geothermal potential of Terceira and São Miguel as well as to manage the water systems and wind farms. These investments are expected to reach a renewable energy penetration rate of 38% in the Region.

The Regional Secretary recalled that the Belo Jardim Thermal Power Station complex on Terceira Island is being restructured. The intervention is expected to be completed by 2016. "In this context, the Government will launch by the end of this year a tender for the installation of a new 9 MW thermal group, an estimated 13 million-Euro investment. The Government recently purchased a new warehouse next to the Belo Jardim geothermal plant in the amount of 390 thousand Euros," announced he government official.

The Regional Secretary also stressed that all medium voltage transmission lines of this island are completed, "except the line that will connect this Geothermal Plant to the 4 Ribeiras substation, which is already in operation, and to the 15 kV bypass line; the latter is at project stage."

"The substation of Praia da Vitória is also in the final testing phase; it is expected to fully operate early next year," Vítor Fraga said, adding that "all the copper low voltage grid is being remodelled and is expected to be completed by next year.

The results of the investment that is being done on this island "are beginning to emerge." We are "proud to see that the downtime of electricity on Terceira Island have been reduced this year to the lowest values ever," the Regional Secretary said, expressing his "gratitude to the board and all employees of the Azores Electricity Company for their work and for this excellent result."

With regard to Pico Alto Geothermal Plant, Vítor Fraga stressed that this unit "represents the achievement of another significant step in the goal of ensuring environmental and energy sustainability in the Azores."

With the implementation of this project, renewable production on Terceira Island will reach about 30%, of which 11% will have a geothermal origin; the equivalent to an annual production of 21 GWh. This will allow an annual reduction in emissions with environmental impact of about 17 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

"With the onset of electricity production through the new geothermal plant, the Region strengthens its position so that we can achieve  in 2019 the renewable energy penetration values, as recommended by the guidelines issued by the Government towards 56% of the total electricity production in the Azores," registered Vítor Fraga.

The Regional Secretary also stressed the efforts made by the Region to implement systems for the generation of electricity from renewable energy on several islands, resulting in the penetration of this type of energy that already represents more than double the estimated figures for the context of the European Union.

"More than mere statistics, these figures show a continuous effort with results and benefits at various levels, starting with the environmental component to the autonomy of the Azores in the field of energy," said Vítor Fraga. They will have "significant effects in reinforcing the economic competitiveness and creating the conditions for more and better jobs."
