Angra do Heroísmo ,  September 10, 2016

Growth of Tourism on Terceira and throughout the Region is the result of hard work, says Vítor Fraga

The Regional Secretary of Tourism and Transport stated in Angra do Heroísmo that the Regional Government has done a "hard work to consolidate and bring new operation to the Region, in general, and to Terceira Island."

Vítor Fraga spoke Friday on the sidelines of a meeting with Portuguese and Spanish travel agents, stressing that "the Region registered a growth of 365,315 overnight stays in the first half of 2016 compared to the first half of 2012, when we began this term, which corresponds to a growth of 86.4%.

"In the case of Terceira, this growth is even higher, that is, an increase of 132.8% if we take into consideration all types of accommodation," added the government official.

With regard to traditional hotels on Terceira Island, the first half of 2016 "was the best half ever in terms of overnight stays, surpassing 121,800 overnight stays, representing an increase of more than 60 thousand overnight stays compared to 2015, i.e., a growth of 95.4%," revealed Vítor Fraga.

The Secretary for Tourism highlighted the performance of the Spanish market, which "represents 29,520 overnight stays, as well as the U.S. market; the latter accounts for about 24 thousand overnight stays."

For the Regional Secretary, the results "emerge the Regional Government's investment in these two operations, one in the Spanish market and another in the U.S. market. Both have responded to what he considered essential to make the tourism sector grow on Terceira, like on other islands."

Vítor Fraga stressed that these investments "have made the Spanish as the fourth largest market in the Region and the second largest market on Terceira Island in terms of tourism flows, representing 23% of the total number of overnight stays."

"We will not stay here; we think we should go further. This is part of a set of pieces that build one of the pillars in the development of tourism on Terceira. This week, another piece was added to its construction in terms of accessibility, with the entry into operation of a low cost company on Terceira," said the government official.

"This announcement was made following a hard, patient and low-profile work we have been developing since September 2014. It received the decisive support of the National Government, during the Prime Minister's visit to the Region," said Vítor Fraga.

For the Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport, this type of meeting with travel agents "is fundamental to convey what we are to those who sell the Azores destination on a daily basis."

"That is what we did here, presenting the destination to all these agents and trying to capture their attention so that they, when selling their holiday destination products, may feel motivated to attract these tourists to our Region instead of other regions of the world," said Vítor Fraga.
