"Great Routes" highlight what is already one of the main tourism products of the Region, ensures Vítor Fraga

The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport stated today that the creation of "Great Routes" falls within a perspective "to highlight what is already one of the main tourism products of the Region." According to him, "about 55% of people who visit the Azores end up having a direct contact with the network of pedestrian trails. The latter has become a key element either in the promotion of the Region or in the key component of providing unforgettable experiences to all those visiting" the archipelago.

Vítor Fraga spoke after visiting the area in which the works that will lead to the creation of the Great Route of Flores Island are taking place. The government official stressed that "this investment falls within the promotion of diversification of the tourism offer" that has been carried out in the archipelago, namely with regard to the network of pedestrian trails; the latter "comprises more than 70 trails spread across the islands in a total area of 658 kilometres."

Vítor Fraga also added that, besides the major routes already open on Faial and Santa Maria, the Government will "soon" open the Great Route of Flores as well as those of São Jorge and Graciosa.

With an extension over 57 kilometres, the Great Route of Flores Island will make the full connection of four small routes that are characterised by their rich landscape and heritage, such as waterfalls, islets, Corvo Island, flora diversity, typical houses and old cobblestone walkways.
