Azoreans from the Emigrant Communities Contribute for Regional Development with the Prestige Network

TextoThe Regional Director of Science, Technology and Communications, who represented the President of the Government of the Azores yesterday afternoon at the opening of the Dr. José Nunes da Ponte Avenue in the village of Conceição, city of Ribeira Grande, praised the fact that the local council chose the day when the country commemorates the Establishment of the Portuguese Republic to pay homage to a true and active Azorean republican.

José Nunes da Ponte stood out in national politics, being the Mayor of Porto, Civil Governor of Porto, Minister of the Republic, and President of the Republican Congress, and yesterday, October 5, an avenue in the city of Ribeira Grande was named after him.

Paulo Menezes highlighted the importance that some Azoreans have had outside the Region in the most diverse fields, in politics, culture, science, among others, “playing highly relevant and prestigious roles,” he stressed.

The Regional Director took the occasion to mention that, having this importance in mind, the Government of the Azores recently launched the Azores Prestige Network “so these successful Azoreans can contribute for the development of their homeland with their experience and knowledge.”

The Azores Prestige Network is a pioneer regional project founded on a paradigm of work based on the use of technology and communications. The network has been conceived as a virtual tool of communication and work, of reflection and scientific development, centring a common effort on the current problems of the archipelago. “It is a strategic project that aims to provide answers in equally strategic areas,” stated Paulo Menezes.
