Parental Education Programme provided training to 140 participants on the islands of Faial and Pico

The Parental Education Programme designated as "More Family, More Youth" is an initiative promoted by the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Social Solidarity. It has covered 140 participants in the editions held on the islands of Faial and Pico throughout this year.

Aimed at parental figures and caregivers of children and young people between the ages of 9 and 18, the programme aims to promote positive parenting. This concept is defined as parental behaviour based on the best interest of the child in order to fulfil their main needs.

Accordingly, the initiative encourages the use of appropriate educational practices, addressing alternative strategies to the use of violence. Furthermore, it provides the recognition and guidance deemed necessary for setting limits on the behaviour of children and young people in view of their full development.

The editions held on Faial and Pico included 58 parents/ caregivers as well as 70 children and youths in actions developed in school context. They also comprised 12 technicians and caregivers working at Children's and Youth Shelters.

The Regional Secretariat for Social Solidarity, in partnership with the Azores Social Security Institute, is organising an "Meeting of Families and Caregivers" today on Faial Island and next Saturday, November 18, on Pico Island.

At the meeting, participants in the "More Family, More Youth" programme will be awarded the respective diplomas. The event also aims to encourage socialisation and the sharing of good practices among all those involved.

Regarding the measures promoted by the Azorean Government to support children and families, Parental Education programmes have been reinforced since their implementation in 2011. Currently, they cover caregivers, parental figures, children and young people on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico.

The programmes implemented in the Region have proven to be effective. In fact, there has been an increase in positive parenting practices and the reduction of behavioural problems at home and at school.
