Oral story sharing among young and older generations to become a reality this year, announces Andreia Cardoso

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity announced in Horta that the Regional Government will implement this year an initiative intended to share traditional oral stories in an intergenerational context, involving children, young people and the elderly.

According to Andreia Cardoso, the implementation of this measure falls under the responsibility of the Regional Directorate for Culture and aims "to improve social responses for youngsters and the elderly." This year, it is expected to reach "2,500 children, young people and the elderly."

"We intend to stimulate the intra and intergenerational sharing of traditional oral stories by putting children, young people and the elderly, side by side, in exchanging experiences and traditional stories," stressed the Regional Secretary.

This project for the sharing of traditional oral stories in an intergenerational context will promote young people's knowledge about the Azores through the life experiences of the elderly, who, in turn, will benefit from sharing and socialising with younger generations. This is one of the measures envisioned in the 2018-2019 biennial action plan of the Regional Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion.

Andreia Cardoso spoke at the ceremony of laying the first stone of Feteira Intergenerational Centre on the island of Faial, a work that "will contribute to an active participation of children and elderly in that village and even in the municipality."

The Secretary for Social Solidarity added that the creation of this Intergenerational Center will "promote social integration between different generations and contribute to the challenges associated with old age and ageing."
