Ponta Delgada ,  December 16, 2013

Azorean Government to fund vacancies in day nurseries and kindergartens, announced Piedade Lalanda

Under the new funding model for Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) and "Santas Casas da Misericórdia," the Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity announced today that the Government will fund a stipulated number of vacancies, which corresponds to 296 vacancies in day nurseries and 123 in kindergartens.

"With this new model, the Government will fund a specific number of vacancies for childcare facilities under the contracts to be signed with social institutions; the number of vacancies for kindergartens will be set at 296, of which 127 are located on São Miguel, and at 123 for kindergartens," stated Piedade Lalanda.

The stipulation of the number of vacancies is expected to have a positive impact on the financial stability of institutions, "because they will be aware of the funds that will be provided to them throughout the year." This measure will also benefit families as they will be able to "know in advance the number of vacancies available at childcare institutions throughout the year, which will facilitate the placement of children in these institutions."

"Families will be informed about the number of vacancies provided by the Regional, which will be available for those who may need them throughout the year," said Piedade Lalanda. The government official spoke at the opening of the renewal works of the day nursery and kindergarten at São Pedro Social and Parish Centre in Ponta Delgada.

In her speech, the Regional Secretary recalled the recent signing of a Base Agreement with the representatives of IPSS and "Santas Casas da Misericórdia." This document defines the implementation rules of the new funding model.

According to her, "the Regional Government intends to invest 8.7 million Euros in contracts to be signed with day nurseries and 4.6 million Euros in kindergartens." These investments will benefit nearly five thousand children across the archipelago.

With regard to the renewal works opened today, Piedade Lalanda stressed that they have created a "more welcoming space that is now provided with better conditions to ensure the balanced development of children."

"The intervention now concluded was carried out to renew the building and create the necessary conditions to adapt the facilities to the technical regulations currently in force, whose main purpose is to ensure the safety and development of children," said the government official.

These renewal works involved a public investment of about 600 thousand Euros in terms of contract works and equipments; the day nursery will now have a capacity for 60 children and the kindergarten will have a capacity for 25 children.

"With this investment, the Government of the Azores demonstrates the importance it attaches to childcare facilities, being a fundamental resource for the protection of children and without forgetting its importance as a valuable support to families in the present moment," said the Regional Secretary. The government official also reiterated the Government's intention of fulfilling the commitment taken to "promote the early education of children, reduce social inequalities and assure equal access of men and women to employment by creating the conditions that allow them to reconcile professional life with family life."

In this context, the Regional Secretary mentioned the future opening of Vila do Porto day nursery on Santa Maria, the construction works of a day nursery in Nordeste, São Miguel Island, which are scheduled to start in 2014, and the investment in the renewal of existing day nurseries.

"The Government of the Azores has been investing in the network of childcare infrastructures in recent years. Currently, it supports a total of 375 childcare facilities that cover 11,500 children and youngsters in various areas, including day nurseries, kindergartens, free time occupation centres and nannies," said Piedade Lalanda.
