Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service participates in European project on Hazards and Volcanic Risk

The Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA) will become an External Collaborator in the European Project on Hazards and Volcanic Risk "VeTOOLS," which is aimed at the development and implementation of computer tools (e-tools) for the evaluation of volcanic hazards and management of volcanic risks.

The invitation was made by the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), one of the partner organisations of this project. This project also has as partners the Higher Council of Scientific Research, Spain, and the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland.

The initiative intends to promote the interaction and cooperation between scientists and members of the Civil Protection services from partner countries. It was approved by the Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO) and its funding is provided by the European Commission.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the project will focus on the island of Pico. The SRPCBA will collaborate in this project by sharing data on the Central Group islands.

Hence, the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service will provide scientific collaboration in the context of this project as regards to the development and application of these tools in situation of catastrophe and decision in situations of earthquake and volcanic crises.
