Regional Government moves forward with coastal protection works near Santa Catarina cannery, in Calheta, São Jorge Island

The Regional Government published today in the Official Journal a resolution authorising the launch of a contract work for the protection and infrastructure works of the municipal road adjacent to the playing field and the Santa Catarina cannery in Calheta, São Jorge Island.

This intervention has a base price of 1.2 million Euros, plus VAT at the legal rate in force, and has a completion period of 12 months from the date of the awarding of the contract work.

The coastline near the Santa Catarina cannery and the playing field in the town of Calheta has suffered damage over the years due to bad weather conditions, especially in 2019 when the archipelago was hit by storm Kyllian and hurricane Lorenzo.

In this context, the project that had been previously developed and publicly presented in January 2019 had to be adjusted to the changes in the coastline caused by bad weather conditions.

Accordingly, this work will include the construction of a rockfill embankment, which is intended to protect the municipal road, the construction of support and protection walls, the intervention in the pluvial drainage system and the creation of footways for pedestrians.

After the public tender procedures, the contract work is expected to start during the third quarter of this year.

This investment, which fulfils the commitment made by the Regional Government, aims to protect and improve the coastal area in the town of Calheta, seeing that it is often hit by adverse sea conditions due to bad weather, which jeopardise the safety conditions of the cliff and the adjacent road.

The resolution, approved by the Council of the Government on April 21, enters into force Friday, April 24.
