Regional Government invests more than 1.2 million Euros in Pico's coastline, bathing areas and fishing ports

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology added that several repair works in the coastline, bathing areas and fishing ports following the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo are already under way or about to start on the island of Pico. These interventions represent an investment amounting to more than 1.2 million Euros.

Gui Menezes spoke on the sidelines of a visit to the site of works at São Mateus Fishing Port, which started at the beginning of the month, an investment of about 177 thousand Euros to be completed in mid-August.

“Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Lorenzo, we take the responsibility for repairing several affected sites on the island of Pico,” said the government official. In this regard, he pointed out the reconstruction of walls and the reinforcement of public road protection at Ana Clara Port in Candelária, the reconstruction of walls and sunbathing areas at Baixas Port in São Caetano, or the protection of the coastline on Porto Novo street in São Mateus.

The Regional Secretary also mentioned the repair of a protection wall in Criação Velha, amounting to 150 thousand Euros, as well as the repair of damages to the coastline in São João, municipality of Lajes, in the same area where a previous intervention had already taken place. The latter work has already been completed.

The works to reinforce the protection of the wharf at Calheta do Nesquim Fishing Port, following the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo, estimated at around 60 thousand Euros, is due to start in August.

The project for the repair of Calhau Fishing Port in Candelária is also being concluded, representing an investment of around 400 thousand Euros, and the consolidation work of Santa Cruz das Ribeiras Fishing Port is at tendering phase.

Gui Menezes stated that, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which “caused delays” in the projects, “as technicians and designers were unable to travel to the affected sites for the surveys, the works are now moving forward at a good pace."
