Azorean Government joins celebrations of National Scientists Day

The Azorean Government joins the official celebrations of the National Scientists Day in Ponta Delgada on May 16, which will be organised by Ciência Viva - National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture.

The celebrations begin with the Science Festival at 10 AM at Praça do Teatro Micaelense with various activities aimed at schools, namely observations of the sun, demonstrations on the deep sea and the launch of "mini-rockets." They will involve the participation of several guest scientists and will be promoted by Expolab - Living Science Centre in collaboration with the Azores Science Centres.

The annual cycle of conferences "Paths of Knowledge, the legacy José Mariano Gago" will take place at Teatro Micaelense at 2 PM. This year's edition addresses themes such as "Science and Development: On the Route of Fernão Magalhães," "Knowledge on the Atlantic: From the Deep Sea to the Observation of the Ocean" and "Knowledge on Space."

This cycle of conferences is directed scientists and to the community in general upon registration on Ciência Viva website.

During the event, the Azorean Government, through the Regional Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology will also sign a collaboration protocol with Ciência Viva to reinforce its strategy for scientific education and citizenship.

The protocol provides for the collaboration between the Azorean Government and Ciência Viva in the activities developed by the Network of the Azores Science Centres (RECCA) as well as in teacher training programmes and the promotion of scientific and technological culture, with special emphasis on the participation in national and international projects.

Reinforcing the links between entities of national territory dedicated to the promotion of scientific and technological culture is another goal of this protocol. This will be achieved either through mechanisms of cooperation and interaction or through the development of synergies favourable to the implementation of actions for the promotion of experimental science teaching and scientific and technological dissemination.

Through this collaboration, the Regional Government intends to attract more international events to the Azores and implement new measures to promote scientific and technological culture aimed at the community in general or for specific audiences. Moreover, there also plans to foster the participation of scientists in networks and partnerships of knowledge, information, science and innovation.

The National Scientists Day was celebrated for the first time in 2017 and was established by Resolution of the National Assembly in October 2016 as a tribute to professor and scientist José Mariano Gago, former Minister of Science; this day also marks the date of his birth.
