There is no single solution for scientific employment, says Regional Director for Science and Technology

The Regional Director for Science and Technology stated today that scientific employment "should have a variable geometry approach," noting that "there is no single solution."

Bruno Pacheco spoke at the round table "Opportunities and challenges for young researchers," under the 2nd International Young Researchers Meeting - JOIN 2017. He defended the existence of "several lines of action," highlighting, among others, the funding of scientific projects, the support to research projects in business context or the development of international research projects.

The Regional Director noted that, under the last tender open for support to scientific research projects, "more than 30 technicians were hired in the Region." With the new tender, "amounting to 3.3 million Euros, to be launched later this year, the hiring of more technicians is expected."

As regards the funding of research projects in business context through the existing line in the Azores 2020 operational programme, with an allocation of 2.5 million Euros, the government official added that, currently," there are three projects with recruitment potential under analysis."

Bruno Pacheco stressed the commitment to attract international scientific projects for the development of activities in the Region by teams based in the archipelago. In this context, he emphasised the "commitment" of the Regional Government that "has ensured the co-financing of MAC projects and the University of Azores" as well as the work carried out by the Regional Fund for Science and Technology, "as a promoter agency. "

In his speech, the Regional Director pointed out that the Government, since 2012, has invested around eight million Euros in advanced training, adding that there is the expectation that "this investment will be boosted in the Region and turned into economic value."

The JOIN 2017, an event which already held in Brazil, Cape Verde, Honduras, Costa Rica and Mexico, is directed to university students from different areas. It intends to promote the questioning and reflection on the introduction to scientific research of college students as well as the sharing of experiences by undergraduate, master's and doctoral students.
