Regional Secretary for Education and Culture announces opening of special teaching application

The Regional Secretariat for Education and Cultural announced in Lagoa, São Miguel, the opening of 97 vacancies in the internal and external special teaching application, whose administrative procedures will start by the end of January.

According to Avelino Meneses, the 97 vacancies open in this application "will partially address the permanent needs  of the education system that were awarded priority status, as the other vacancies will open in the next school year."

Avelino Meneses visited today the basic education and secondary schools in the municipality of Lagoa. During his visit, the government official stated that the opening of vacancies "will focus on the subjects of Portuguese Language and Mathematics in order to promote school success."

This application will award priority status to the area of special education with the opening of 29 vacancies," which is important to the creation of a truly inclusive school for all of us."

In this context, the government official added that, in addition to what is already implemented in preschool and elementary school, "all schools comprising middle school and junior high school levels will be provided with special education teachers."

The field of artistic education and vocational music education, whose vacancies were not filled last year "due to the lack of applicants," will be also awarded "priority status," added the Regional Secretary.

"With the exception of artistic education, vocational music education and special education all the remaining vacancies will be eventually filled by qualified teachers who have completed 1,075 days of service at regional public schools in the last three years. Eligible teachers may apply in the 1st priority rank; they are the primary recipients of the European directive on the integration of hired teachers into the regional teaching staff," said the Regional Secretary.

Avelino Meneses conveyed his expectation to conclude "the integration process of hired teachers into the regional teaching staff to meet the permanent needs of the regional education service," after the third special teaching application in 2016.

However, the Regional Secretary assured that "the majority of hired teachers in the Region do not address the permanent needs of the regional education system. In fact, they only meet temporary needs resulting from the temporary replacement of the members of school administration boards, teachers performing other public duties and union duties, and teachers performing duties under temporary assignment."

According to calendar already available on the Education Portal, the Government will open the application for the hiring of teachers on a fixed-term contract and the application for the internal admission of teachers (teaching staff members who wish to work in a different school for a one-year period) in May or June. These applications are intended to address the temporary needs of the regional education system.

The distribution of 97 teaching vacancies open in this application will be the following: 51 on São Miguel, 17 on Terceira, 9 on Pico, 4 on Faial, 3 on Santa Maria, 3 on São Jorge, 3 on Flores, 3 on Corvo, 2 on Graciosa and 2 for the subject of Catholic Religious and Moral Education.
