Government of the Azores starts negotiations with teachers' unions on teaching application

The Government of the Azores opened today the negotiation process with teachers' unions for the revision of the rules on the Teaching Application.

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture met today in Ponta Delgada with the boards of the Teachers’ Union of the Azores and the Teachers’ Democratic Union of the Azores. He stressed that, we these meetings, the Government "begins the fulfilment" of the commitment taken in the end of the previous term.

According to Avelino Meneses, today's meetings were intended "to establish the scheduling for negotiations," whose outcome may occur in January 2017.

"We proposed that this negotiation process should be developed following two negotiation meetings, which was generally accepted, and we will make an effort so that it may be completed in January, a deadline that will allow a thorough discussion," added the government official.

This deadline, stressed the Secretary for Education, will "eventually" allow the launch of a tender procedure in 2017.

Avelino Meneses added that the Government took the commitment to restore the frequency of applications, which will be held on an annual basis, and the revision of the rules requiring teachers to work at the same school for a period three years.

This compromise is possible due to "the stability of the teaching staff" in Azorean school, said the government official, said the government official.

The Government of the Azores, added the Regional Secretary, it is available to "listen" to teachers' unions regarding other "possible" proposals for the revision of the rules, whose proposal will be submitted this week to the unions.
