Corruption is fought with education, says Avelino Meneses

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture defended today in Ponta Delgada that "more" education contributes to "an effective decrease" of corruption.

Avelino Meneses spoke at the delivery session of the honourable mention to Domingos Rebelo Secondary School under the "Images against Corruption" contest. On the occasion, he stressed that, at a social level, corruption "stems from the lack of culture," which makes citizens "much more submissive and much less demanding."

Moreover, the government official pointed out that, politically, corruption "stems from dictatorship and centralism. At this level, its "antidotes" are freedom, democracy and decentralisation insofar as they allow "transparency and control of procedures" and "promote the participation of the community."

Domingos Rebelo Secondary School is one of the six schools involved in the "Prevention is Better" project. It has also participated in the "Images against Corruption" contest, being awarded an Honourable Mention for the work titled as "Who breaks?” This initiative was promoted by the Council for the Prevention of Corruption.

Students participating in this project, under the guidance of teacher Gilberto Cardoso, have addressed the theme through dialogue and explanations about the concept of corruption and forms of fighting against it in a video available at the electronic address http://concursos.cpc.tcontas.pt/2017-2018/vencedores/05-3ciclo__extra002.html.
