Community Intervention Partnership for educational success extended to Ribeira Grande and Ponta Delgada schools

The Community Intervention Partnership (PIC) for educational success “School, Family, Community” will be extended next school year (2019/2020) to the basic education schools of Maia in Ribeira Grande and Arrifes in Ponta Delgada. Hence, all municipalities of S. Miguel Island will be covered by this initiative promoted by the Regional Government.

This partnership is developed under the responsibility of the Regional Secretariats for Education and Culture and for Social Solidarity as well as of municipal councils. In turn, a team from the Higher Institute of Applied Psychology (ISPA) is responsible for the scientific coordination of the project.

The initiative, already implemented in the municipalities of Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo, Nordeste and Povoação, aims to promote educational success, reducing school failure and dropout. The school establishments covered by the project are registering significant improvements in the students' average marks as well as in the remaining indicators.

In the school year now ending (2018/2019), all school establishments involved in the PIC project achieved, for the first time, non-progression rates in regular basic education below 10%.

In turn, the success rates for regular basic school students who made the commitment under PIC ranged from 56% to 83%.

In the context of this partnership, truancy and discipline problems have decreased, while the participation of parents and guardians in school context has increased.

At some school establishments, such as Lagoa, the Basic Education School has registered a systematic decrease in non-progression rates, reaching a record 3.3% failure rate in 2018/2019. As for the Secondary School, the non-progression rate in the junior high school level dropped to 6.7%, i.e., more than five percentage points below the 2015/2016 rate, the year prior the implementation of this partnership.

In turn, the Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues Secondary School in Vila Franca do Campo registered a decrease of 8.2 percentage points in the non-progression rate in the junior high school level compared to 2016/2017, the year before the partnership.

At the Povoação Basic Education and Secondary School, which began the PIC project in 2018/2019, the non-progression rate dropped in all basic education level and the failure rate also decreased from 17.3% in 2017/2018 to 9.5% in 2018/19.

In the first year of participation in PIC, the already low non-progression rates registered by the Nordeste Basic Education and Secondary School, standing at 5% in overall basic education, further dropped to figures below 3% in the elementary and middle school levels.

The PIC project falls within the Integrated Plan for the Promotion of School Success - ProSucesso, Azores for Education, which has been force since 2015 for a 10-year period. This initiative is focused on the three priority action axes defined with the aim of significantly improve the quality of learning and reducing failure and early school dropout rates, with special emphasis on the third axis “Mobilising the educational community and social partners."

The Community Intervention Partnership “School, Family, Community” began in the school year 2016/2017 at the three school establishments of Lagoa.

In the school year 2017/2018, the initiative was extended to the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo and to the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação in 2018/2019.

The partnerships established also count on the collaboration of the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth, Youth Inclusion and Development Centres, Free-Time Occupation Centres as well as sports, recreational and cultural associations and other public, private and cooperative entities.
