Angra do Heroísmo ,  May 02, 2016

Azorean students interview writer Mia Couto

Mozambican writer Mia Couto, who has been in the Azores since the end of April, participates in a meeting with junior high and secondary school students on Terceira Island next Friday, May 6, under ProSucesso - Regional Reading Plan.

The meeting will begin at 10 Am at the António Dacosta Auditorium of Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School in Angra do Heroísmo. Mia Couto will be available to answer questions about the life and work that previously were discussed and prepared in class by students of the Azores schools. The interview will be conducted by Azorean writer Joel Neto.

Mia Couto is writing the second novel in the trilogy "As Areias do Imperador," whose first romance "Mulheres de Cinza" was published in September 2015. It focuses on the last days of the so-called state of Gaza, the second largest empire in Africa ruled by Ngungunyane, or Gungunhane, as it became known by the Portuguese.

Gungunhane, the last of the emperors who ruled the entire southern half of Mozambique, was defeated in 1895 by the Portuguese forces commanded by Mouzinho of Albuquerque. He was then taken to the Azores, more specifically to Angra do Heroísmo, where he died in 1906 .

The interview with Mia Couto will be broadcast live via the Global TV Azores at the address http://tv.azoresglobal.com, which was also the case of the open class on Azorean writer Daniel de Sá conducted by Dionísio de Sousa.
