Azorean Government to invest 60 thousand Euros in computer equipment for schools, says Avelino Meneses

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated on the island of Terceira that the Azorean Government will continue the investment aimed at equipping regional schools with "modern computer equipment" in the 2018/2019 school year.

Avelino Meneses spoke at the opening of the 2nd Regional Meeting of Technologies in Education taking place at Francisco Ferreira Drummond in the town of Vila de São Sebastião. According to him, this investment should reach 60 thousand Euros.

The schools covered by this measure in the school year that is about to start are located in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Povoação and Nordeste (S. Miguel), mentioned the Secretary for Education.

In the 2017/2018 school year, the investment in computer equipment for schools, which also amounted to 60 thousand Euros, covered the schools of Corvo, Flores, Santa Maria and Topo (S. Jorge).

With schools equipped with technologies that "already belong to student's daily life," Avelino Meneses pointed out that teachers are also receiving training on the use of these technologies, such as the case of the initiative taking place until Wednesday at Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School.

This initiative is part of Prosucesso initiative and TOPA programme - Bring Your Own Device. The latter aims to stimulate and promote digital skills among Azorean students with the guidance of their teachers so that they may develop a digital literacy that will provide them with the necessary tools for equal opportunities in the new digital economy in a global context.

This is a fundamental guideline issued by the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, which has assigned a very important role to Information and Communication Technologies in the basic education and secondary school curricula. The main goal is to endow Azorean students with skills in the digital areas, which has been achieved through programmes such as TOPA, REDA, Anima 3D, Programming and Robotics (e.bot) and other developed at national level in partnership with the Directorate-General of Education.
