Avelino Meneses emphasises Carlos Nascimento as an example of entrepreneurship and wisdom

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture highlighted in Vila do Corvo the personality of Manuel Carlos Jorge do Nascimento as "an example of entrepreneurship and wisdom."

"Let us make an example of him. Today, nearly a century away, if we know how to reconcile entrepreneurship and wisdom in the action of all our citizens, we will be able to build a better Azores, internally, and we will generate added value to the Azores," said Avelino Meneses.

The Regional Secretary spoke at the launch session of the Azores Cultural Itinerary on this personality, who was born on Corvo and emigrated early in his life to the United States and then to Chile. In this regard, he stressed the "greatness" of Carlos Nascimento, which justifies "by itself" the fact the one of the Cultural Itineraries is dedicated to him.

Manuel Carlos Jorge Nascimento was in Vila do Corvo in April 1885. A whaler's son, he took over the operation of Nascimento Bookshop while living in Chile. It was owned by his uncle and heirs, which he then turned into Editorial Nascimento (publishing company).

This Corvo islander was awarded posthumously an Autonomic Commendation of Merit by the Autonomous Region of the Azores. He was in charge of publishing the works of Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, both laureates of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Azores Cultural Itinerary on Manuel Carlos Jorge Nascimento in bilingual edition - Portuguese and English - includes a text by João Saramago, professor at the University of the Azores who is a native of Corvo Island.

The Region, by recommendation of the Legislative Assembly, has been publishing several cultural routes, which are presented in foldout brochure format. They focus on personalities from different islands and contain historical notes about them.

So far, the Government has published itineraries on Antero de Quental (São Miguel), Vitorino Nemesio (Terceira), Manuel de Arriaga (Faial), Dias de Melo (Pico), Francisco Lacerda (São Jorge), Roberto Mesquita (Flores), and one on Raul Brandão, though he was not born in the Azores. Nevertheless, according to Avelino Meneses, he wrote "one of the best descriptions of Corvo and its people" in his work "As Ilhas Desconhecidas" (The Unknown Islands).
