Angra do Heroísmo ,  August 02, 2019

Avelino Meneses considers that being a teacher in the Azores "is quite attractive"

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture restated in Angra do Heroísmo that being a teacher in the Azores "is quite attractive" because, among other things, the Region has "the best Teaching Career Statute."

Avelino Meneses spoke journalists after a meeting with leaders of the Teachers' Democratic Union of the Azores (SDPA). On the occasion, he also stated that the Region has the “best evaluation system, which has now been copied abroad."

The Azores have the “best” teaching application rules, which adds up to the fact that the teachers' length of service in the so-called "years of non-progression" has been recently taken into consideration for calculation purposes, stated the government official.

Hence, the Regional Secretary stressed that, unlike others, the teaching career in the Azores “is right now quite attractive," ensuring that the necessary assessments will be carried out "at any time."

Avelino Meneses also stated that in the current school year, as in previous years, there were no “students were left without teachers” in the Azores and such a situation is not “expected” to occur in the future.

Moreover, the Secretary for Education rejected the idea that the number of hired teachers is excessive. In fact, "whenever" there are teachers hired for permanent positions in the education system, the department opens the applications for these vacancies.

"Evidently, the regional education system, as everywhere, will always depend on a relatively large number of hired teachers as they are replacing teachers who are performing other duties," stated Avelino Meneses.
