Scientific Commission of the Reading Regional Plan updated list of recommended readings

The Scientific Commmission of the Regional Reading Plan (PRL), a body chaired by Manuel Tomás Costa that also includes members Maria João Cavaco and Victor Rui Dores, has updated the list of recommended readings with the introduction of 19 new works.

With the inclusion of these works, the PRL list now includes 167 titles, comprising works of authors or themes that are not included in the national list.

The Regional Reading Plan, which is a supplement to the National Reading Plan, aims to become a tool to support educators and teachers of different education levels in the annual preparation of teaching activities, being a dynamic process that follows the evolution of national and regional literature.

The books on the list of works recommended by PRL comply with various criteria: books whose aesthetic quality allows pre-readers and early readers to harmoniously develop their sensitivity, imagination and intelligence; narrative, lyrical and dramatic works of complexity progressive that offer a literary reading; classic children's and youth books.

It also includes traditional narratives, books of informative nature that stand out for their accuracy and suitability for children and young audiences, activity books that enhance a functional reading and books whose contents are in line with school projects.

The list of proposed works is available on the Azores Education website at the address http://www.edu.azores.gov.pt/projectos/planoregionalleitura/Paginas/Livros-Recomendados-201320141003-5171.aspx. It is divided by levels of education and reading orientations to facilitate access to the information it contains: support to projects, regional history, language learning, art and essays, among others.

In view of the continuous improvement of the list of works recommended by the Regional Reading Plan, publishers or authors whose works meet the selection criteria and promote the reading of Azorean authors or works about the Azores that are primarily directed to preschool, basic education and secondary school students may register their works at the address https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1SBfPOlRDrziGlilgLWzC_vIGR_r6TCRf4-anGA1byjA/viewform?formkey=dFgyNlUzdWhFNHA4SDJqUGRSc2FKT2c6MQ. Moreover, they are required to send three copies to the address of the Regional Reading Plan, Regional Directorate for Education, at Paços da Junta Geral – Carreira dos Cavalos - 9700-167 Angra do Heroísmo until May 31, 2017.
