Whaling exhibition on Faial until September 30

A Whaling Exhibition organised by the New Bedford Whaling Museum, USA, will be open to the public at the Multipurpose Room of the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in the city of Horta until September 30. It may be visited from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

This initiative is the result of a cooperation established between the Presidency of the Regional Government/Regional Directorate for Culture and the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Massachusetts, an institution dedicated to the study of the interaction between humans and whales in its various aspects.

In this context, the exhibition, which has already been open to the public on the island of Pico, aims to disseminate the history of whaling in America and in the Azores by highlighting and correlating its most significant economic, social and cultural aspects, such as subsistence and commercial whaling activities, the American innovations introduced in the Azorean whaling, the role played by the Dabney Family or the Azorean legacy in New Bedford.

Spread by fifteen panels, the information texts at this exhibition will be provided in English and, in this context, a Portuguese translation will be also available to visitors.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum houses a collection of over 750,000 objects, being the world’s largest whaling museum.
