Regional Directorate for Culture signs protocol for museum conversion of heritage dating back to submarine telegraph cable period on Faial

The Regional Directorate for Culture signs today in Horta a cooperation protocol with the Association of Former Students of Horta Secondary School towards the preservation, classification and museum conversion of heritage dating back to the submarine telegraph cable period on Faial Island.

The signing of the protocol, scheduled for 9 PM, is part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of that association to be held at João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive.

Following a resolution approved by the Legislative Assembly, this protocol will contribute to the creation of a museum centre within the Horta Museum that will be dedicated to the area of communications in a heritage context. It consists of a single building located in Trinity House/Joint Cable Station. The investment is included in the mapping of infrastructures approved under the Azores 2020 Operational Plan.

It falls within the Government's strategy towards the consolidation of a consistent and pluralistic museum offer, based on cultural complementarity and diversity, namely through the creation of the Network of Visiting Museums and Collections of the Azores.

The Association of Former Students of Horta Secondary School has played a relevant role in promoting a civic movement based on the intervention of the Group of Friends of Submarine Cables of Horta. Taking into consideration the remarkable results achieved in favour of the museum conversion of this heritage, the Regional Directorate for Culture has decided to support initiatives aimed at promoting the purposes of this protocol.

It is a commitment that is expected to reach a national and international dimension. In this regard, the Government will develop networks to join and coordinate efforts towards the preparation of a proposal for international heritage classification.
