Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive promotes meeting with writers

The Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, in collaboration with the National Cultural Centre promotes the "Meeting with Writers" dedicated to Teolinda Gersão and Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida next Thursday, November 24.

The session takes place at Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive at 6:30 PM. The presentation will be made by Leonor Sampaio and Madalena Teixeira da Silva, professors at the University of the Azores.

Teolinda Gersão studied at the Universities of Coimbra, Tübingen and Berlin. As lecturer, she taught Portuguese at the Technical University of Berlin. She held the position of full professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University), where she taught German Literature and Comparative Literature.

As the author of 14 fiction books, translated into 11 languages, Teolinda Gersão won twice the PEN Club Fiction Prize for the works "O silêncio" and "O cavalo de sol." She was also the recipient of various prizes: Grand Prix of Romance and Novel of the Portuguese Writers Association (EPA), Fernando Namora Prize, Camilo Castelo Branco Grand Prize, Máxima Literature Prize, Inês de Castro Foundation Prize, Ciranda Prize and António Quadros Foundation Prize.

In 2004, Teolinda Gersão was resident writer at the University of Berkeley. Some of her books were adapted to theatre plays and were staged in Portugal, Germany and Romania.

Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida was born in Luanda. She is a new name in Portuguese literature, having started her literary career with the work titled as "Esse cabelo." This book crosses memories, essay and fiction; it stems from the relationship between a young girl and her curly hair.

She holds a PhD in Literary Theory from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon). Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida began writing this book when she left the academic life.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events are available for consultation at the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the electronic address www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
