Pico Museum hosts "Film Nights" under Pico Mountain Festival

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Pico Museum and in partnership with MiratecArts association, hosts "Film Nights" in January at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico.

This initiative is included in the programme of the 3rd Pico Mountain Festival. It aims to promote the exhibition of award-winning films written by major names of European cinema.

The first screening takes place on January 7 at 8:30 PM and will be attended by filmmakers Jorge Pelicano and João Pedro Plácido, who will address the existence of mountain communities in Portugal through the exhibition of the films" Ainda há Pastores?" and "Volta à Terra." Although they were produced in different decades, they reveal similarities in the manner they address the issue of the disappearance of these communities.

The opening session of this initiative will also present Polish filmmaker Julia Popławska, who will present her latest work, a short film titled as "The Place."

The sessions of "Film Nights," featuring films with subtitles in Portuguese, will take place on January 10, 17, 24 and 31 January at 9 PM; admission is free.

The programme features the last film by Italian brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviana titled as "Woundrous Boccacio," based on the masterpiece "Decameron." The film will be screened for the first time in the Azores as well as the Norwegian documentary "Out of Nature" by Ole Giaver; the latter depicts a walk in the mind of a young man who ventures into the mountains.

The film distinguished with the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Festival, "Force Majeure" by Ruben Ostlund, and the film "Loin des Hommes" by David Oelhoffen, featuring Viggo Mortensen, will be also included in the festival's programme.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
