Performance highlighted in November schedule of Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre

A cycle dedicated to Performance, under the curatorship of Mariana Brandão, is the main highlight of the November schedule of Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre on the island of S. Miguel.

The beginning of the November programming starts with "Out in Space," a performance by Dinis Machado that is divided into two parts: "Out in Space (cosmogony)," which translates into a time-to-one in loop, with a duration 10 minutes for each participant, and "Out In Space (Experiences on Autonomy)" aimed at the public in general.

On November 14, starting at 5:30 PM, Gustavo Sumpta presents "The Best Possible World" a performance about what unites us beyond language, followed by "Dust lamp," which addresses the time we use and spend on things that go nowhere on those we lost.

The curator of this cycle, Mariana Brandão, returns to the Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre between November 14 and 15 to continue the course that started in October held under the title "Performance Yesterday and Today."

Starting from examples and analysis of works now considered "historical," this course discusses the concept of Performance in an artistic context in order to come up with something more interesting than the traditional definition of arts."

Contrary to an evolutionary vision of History (Art), the sessions are organised into themes, which conveys a series of ideas, notions and concepts that enable the coordination of references concerning several time, spaces and contexts.

In turn, Miguel Palma presents his work at an Open Day on November 20 at 9:30 PM in partnership with Pico do Refúgio.

This work is based on the construction of a sculpture which resembles a tent, but instead of having the shape of a pyramid or a hemisphere, will have the morphology of São Miguel Island.

Likewise a camping tent, it is a portable piece, easy to assemble and disassemble, and consists of a wooden base, with about two meters; its outline resembles the aerial view of the island of São Miguel.

This base is coated with a waterproof fabric with a flat colour, which gives the illusion of the island's morphology.

In turn, the Educational Services of Arquipélago will work from the exhibition that is currently open to the public, with the activity "A Horizon of Possibilities," which takes place on November 21.

Based on a visit to the exhibition on the theme of landscape and perception of the territory, which starts from the reading of the works of António Cachola's collection, this moment suggests what inspires artists as well as their techniques, materials, colours and shapes they use in their artistic creations.

The visit will culminate in an artistic expression workshop that explores the definition of horizon.

The collage workshop, "New Contexts", is targeted at a young audience, aged between 6 and 12, and will take place from November 14 to 28.

This workshop starts with the analysis, selection and decontextualization of pre-existing images in different sources, such as newspapers and magazines, with the aims demonstrating how it is possible to create new contexts for the carefully selected images.

"Looking at the practice of contemporary architectural" is another of the activities planned for November; it is aimed at an adult audience and will take place after working hours.

The workshop begins on November 27 and extends through the three first Fridays of December. It will explore the beginnings of contemporary architectural practice as well as its basic concepts, taking as example the ARQUIPÉLAGO building as the main object of interpretation and reflection.

How to think the architectural space in the abstract, how do we understand the relation of architectural forms and what are the main features of modern and contemporary architecture are some of the topics to be addressed at four theoretical and practical sessions.

On October 16, Arquipélago opened its second exhibition, "An Horizon of Proximity: a topology told from António Cachola Collection," under the curatorship of Sérgio Mah. It will be open to the public until February 28.

This Contemporary Arts Centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM 6 PM. It offers the possibility of scheduling guided tours to the exhibition and the building at the address [email protected].

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
