Carlos Machado Museum opens "Tomaz Borba Vieira - Paths of Being" exhibition

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Carlos Machado Museum, opens the exhibition titled "Tomaz Borba Vieira - Paths of Being" at the Santa Bárbara and Sacred Arts Centres in Ponta Delgada next Friday, October 28, at 6 PM.

This exhibition offers an overview of the various phases of the painter's artistic path in the period between 1956 and 2016, where painting, sculpture, drawing, screen printing, illustration and writing express their multiple channels of dialogue with the world.

The existential reflection of the 1960s, the political questioning of the colonial period, the island, the archipelago, the sea, submerged libraries, aquatic architectures, social reflection of the 1980s and 1990s, including "Women in Rabo de Peixe and Men in Rosto de Cão," are some of the recurring themes in the painter's work.

Sculptor José Maria de França Machado is the exhibition commissioner; it may be visited until January 31. The initiative aims to disseminate the magnitude of the artistic production of this renowned Azorean painter and, simultaneously, bring different audiences closer to his work, the majority of which being dispersed in national and international private collections.

Tomaz Borba Vieira studied Painting at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon, Art Wall at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts in Italy, Pedagogy at the University of Lisbon and Educational Sciences at the University of Boston, USA.

In 2006, he was the recipient of an Autonomic Commendation of Recognition bestowed by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Tomaz Vieira has held solo and collective exhibitions; his works make up several public and private collections.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
