Azores mark World Book and Copyright Day

The Azores, through Public Libraries and Regional Archives under the administration of the Regional Directorate for Culture, join the celebrations of the World Book and Copyright Day, held every year on April 23, with the promotion of various initiatives.

The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive will promote the activity "Ricontando" next Wednesday, April 24, at 9 PM, a soiree of short stories for adult audiences presented by Valter Peres; admission is free.

In the context of these celebrations, the Library also promotes a session of short stories session aimed at school groups, also presented by Valter Peres.

These session are held under the motto "It is said that..." and will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23 and 24, at 10 AM and 1:30 PM.

In turn, the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta joins these celebrations by promoting a "Marathon of Readings" to take place on Tuesday, April 23, from 9 AM to 5 PM.

This initiative is addressed to the entire community of Faial. It will count on the participation of Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School, Horta Basic Education School, Horta Vocational Training School, Santo António School, Senior University of Faial, Occupational Activity Centre of "Santa Casa da Misericórdia" (social solidarity institution), APADIF-Association of Parents and Friends of Disabled People of Faial, and the "Tea with Books" - Community of Readers.

The Library will also present a book exhibition under the theme "Masterpieces of universal literature," which will be open to the public from Tuesday, April 23.

In turn, the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive in Angra do Heroísmo holds the "2nd Meeting of Voices - Freedom in Literature" on April 23 at 9 PM.

This initiative features a panel of guest readers, namely Bárbara Loução, Fernanda Fantasia, Herculano Godinho, Miguel Monjardino and Teresa Valadão, who will share texts related to the theme of freedom in literature.

In 1995, UNESCO declared April 23 as the World Book and Copyright Day with the aim of promoting books and reading.

The date marks the birth and death of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and the birth of Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616).

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
