Angra do Heroísmo ,  May 17, 2017

Azores mark International Day of Museums and Night of Museums

The Regional Directorate for Culture joins the celebrations of the International Day of Museums, marked on May 18, and the Night of Museums, which takes place on May 20. It will present the dissemination of digital information on Regional Museum, while promoting a series of events organised by its External Services.

The Regional Directorate for Culture and its External Services have been providing several digital contents directed to the public in general. They are available on the Azores Culture portal, the Regional Directorate for Culture website in the Regional Government platform and websites managed by some governmental services, namely the public libraries and regional archives of Angra do Heroísmo and Ponta Delgada as well as the Carlos Machado and Angra do Heroísmo museums.

The dissemination of initiatives and cultural contents are paramount in a knowledge society based on new technologies. In this regard, the Regional Directorate for Culture intends to continue to develop this type of digital information initiative and to extend cultural dissemination mechanisms. From that date, it will launch new five websites for the museums of Santa Maria, Graciosa, Pico, Horta, Flores and Francisco Lacerda (São Jorge Island).

This initiative takes place under the celebrations of the International Day of Museums and Night of Museums, whose theme for this year, defined by ICON - International Council of Museums, will be "Museums and controversial stories: saying the unspeakable in museums."

For its part, the Night of Museums will be marked with the organisation of several events offering attractive and different activities that are not usually provided by these institutions.

In this context, the Horta Museum promotes a presentation and visit to Manuel de Arriaga House on May 18. The activity is directed to students attending basic education and secondary schools as well as vocational training schools.

The initiative aims to disseminate the House and the man who was the first President of the Republic. Those who are interested can make their registration at the reception desk of Horta Museum and Manuel de Arriaga House, at the email address [email protected] or the telephone number 292 202 576.

In turn, the Santa Maria Museum joins the celebrations with the exhibition of 25 cartoons by Luís Afonso that depict several themes, including social criticism, politics, leisure and sports.

This exhibition of works by one of the major names of this art in Portugal opens on May 18 and will be open to the public until July.

The Francisco Lacerda Museum on São Jorge will open the exhibition entitled "Maria Machado, the fighter of the letters" on May 18 at 8 PM.

The opening session includes a tribute to António Dias, honouring the donation of his personal book collection to Francisco Lacerda Museum, as well as a short theatre play on the life of Maria Machado entitled "The Rubina" performed by the Iuventute Virtutis Theatre Group Association.

Maria Machado was born in Ribeira Seca on São Jorge Island in 1890. She worked as basic education teacher, having dedicated her life to the education of children and adults, mainly through the installation of libraries in disadvantaged communities.

On her own initiative, the Library of União Popular Philharmonic Band of Ribeira Seca was founded in the late 1940s, whose work was perpetuated by António Dias.

Also on May 18, the Graciosa Museum will organise commented visits to its premises between 10 AM and 12 PM under the guidance of its director.

On the same day, the Graciosa youth theatre group, As Sementinhas, will present the theatre play entitled "The boy who did not like reading" at "Casa do Povo" of Praia.

The Pico Museum, in partnership with São Roque do Pico Town Hall, presents the third and revised edition of the work "The Whale Factory of São Roque do Pico" and the first edition of the São Roque do Pico Whale Factory Itinerary; both presentations will be carried out by José Carlos Garcia. The event takes place on May 20 at 9 PM.

The session includes the presentation of a paper under the title "The School Comes to the Museum" by Gilberta Pereira, teacher at Pico Vocational Training School, and a guided tour to the Museum.

Included in the celebrations of the Night of Museums, this event also marks the 23rd anniversary of the Whaling Industry Museum, a facility that was transformed into a museum on May 20, 1994.

The Carlos Machado Museum also joins the celebrations of the International Day of Museums and Night of Museums, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of painter Duarte Maia.

On May 18, at 6 PM, it opens the exhibition of works depicting his artistic path, which will be open to the public at the Sacred Art Museum in Ponta Delgada until September 24.

A native of S. Miguel, Duarte Maia was enrolled at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon and pursued his artistic education in Paris under the guidance of masters such as Benjamin Constant and Luc-Olivier Merson.

He was a member of the organising committee for the first Fine Arts exhibitions in Ponta Delgada. These initiatives have led to the creation of the Art Section of the Carlos Machado Museum in 2012.

The Angra do Heroísmo Museum celebrates the Night of Museums, marking the 90th anniversary of "Terceira's Documentary" by António Luís Lourenço da Costa, the first known film record of Angra do Heroísmo. The initiative also includes the presentation of a fashion collection by Sílvia Teixeira. It is the result of a Creative Residence organised by the Regional Centre for Handicrafts in 2016 to disseminate the lace work of Pico and Faial.

The event will recreate some scenes portraying city life in the beginning of the 20th century as recorded by that "filmmaker" in a valuable document, whose original film belongs to the collection of Angra do Heroísmo Museum. It will take on May 20, starting at 9:30 PM.

The fashion show is composed of 12 women's and men's ready-to-wear pieces featuring certified lace of Pico and Faial, being inspired by the glamour of the 1930's. Moreover, it includes the screening of the documentary "Terceira's Documentary," reassembled by Sara Leal, in order to include images that currently depict some of the spaces shot in the 1927 version.

The fashion show will feature the collaboration of scenographer Ana Brum and the museum's Theatre Company, A Sala, with musical performances Wave Jazz Ensemble and Dr. Vi bands, followed by an after-party with Djs Monkeyshoes and Mr. Apples.

The cloister will be the venue of a regional product market.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events are available for consultation at the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the address www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt
