Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre to promote over a dozen events in June

Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre in Ribeira Grande, under the coordination of the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes several initiatives in June, namely exhibitions, theatre plays, concerts and the opening of the facilities of the Artistic Residency designated as "Salutem: à tua saúde."

On June 3, the cycle of guided summer tours, entitled "From the same hands," starts at 10:30 AM with a guided tour to the work of Rui Chafes at Santana Palace in Ponta Delgada.

His work, which makes up the Arquipélago Contemporary Art Collection, may be visited at the Contemporary Arts Centre during the month of June.

This cycle of guided tours aims to disseminate the Arquipélago collection as well as the cultural assets belonging to different institutions on the island of São Miguel. The remaining visits are schedule for July 1, August 5 and September 2.

Also on Saturday, June 3, the Centre will host the "Sing with me, I read with you" show by Alda Fernandes and Anabela Cura. The project was distinguished by the Regional Directorate for Education with second place under the "Daring, Intervening, Improving" award.

On June 9 and 10, the "House of Nic and Inês" project will organise two workshops.

The first, "Animated and Illustrated Books," runs from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. It will allow participants to experiment with paper engineering techniques, developing their imagination and creativity through the use of collages, stamps and prints as well as drawings and other techniques.

The second, "Illustrated Pop-Up," takes place from 2:30 PM to 5 PM. It will allow participants to experiment with cutting and pasting techniques, focusing on the mechanics of pop-up, so that each participant may create their own book, with a three-dimensional illustration full of original shapes and images.

Moreover, the works developed under the Artistic Residence "Salutem: à tua saúde" will be opened in June.

On June 16, Hugo Paquete opens his installation with a performance at Arquipélago, while Ana Nobre presents her performance and installation at Colégio Church in Ponta Delgada on June 18.

On June 17, the theatre play "Three Sister" will tour the blackbox, the basement and the room of the Educational Service of Arquipélago, starting at 9:30 PM.

This piece consists of a three-way monologue, with text by Luísa Monteiro, Valério Romão and Rui Pina Coelho.

On June 25, the concert by "Cello Junior Ensemble & Amigos" is scheduled for 5 PM. Developed by the Regional Conservatory of Ponta Delgada, this project features 15 young cellists who invite other musicians to perform in a unique show in the basement of the Arts Centre.

On June 30, the theatre returns to Arquipélago at 9:30 PM with "Hotel Louisiana Room 58," a play written by João Samões based on the life and work of Albert Cossery.

This play, featuring Joana Bárcia, is co-produced by Debataberto and Teatro Nacional São João, with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

For its part, the Educational Service joins the celebrations of the Children's Day on June 1 with the activity "Come colouring Arquipélago." It will provide participants with the opportunity to play with colour, through the cut of human body shapes that will be glued on a canvas with the image of the Contemporary Arts Centre, to colour the floor with chalk, giving it a new life.

In turn, the "Folding Symmetries" activity takes place on June 1, 2 and 3, crossing over with part of the "Catarina Branco" exhibition, recently opened at Arquipélago. It aims to give life to the paper leftovers that the artist used for her work entitled "Gift."

The "Arquipélago in Pause" initiative will take place between June 6 and 8, allowing participants to visit a selection of works from the "Liquid Time" exhibition, including the work "Secret Strike. Bank Building Utrecht" by Alicia Framis.

Between June 20 and 24, the "Discovering Patterns" activity will take participants on a visit to Catarina Branco's exhibition, where they will observe and discover patterns and then launch the challenge to build a group composition.

The activities of the Educational Service take place during the week between 10 AM and 12:30 PM, between 2 PM and 4:30 PM for school and other similar institutions and between 3 PM and 5:30 PM for families (Saturdays).

Registrations should be made through the electronic address www.arquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt or the email [email protected].

The Arquipélago will also host the exhibitions "Catarina Branco" and "Liquid Weather - A dialogue of videos from the Maria & Armando Cabral and Cal Cego collections," featuring works by Bruce Nauman, Doug Aitken, Douglas Gordon, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Alicia Framis, André Romão, Cory Arcangel, David Bestué & Marc Vives, Ignacio Uriarte, João Onofre, Muntadas, Nuno Cera, Perejaume and Rui Toscano; both are curated by Carolina Grau and will be open until July.
