Angra do Heroísmo Museum promotes Portuguese-American reading marathon

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, promotes the second reading marathon of the novel "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville in Portuguese, a translation and adaptation by Pedro Alves and Tiago Patrício. The event will be held simultaneously with the New Bedford Whaling Museum in the USA and the Sea Observatory in Horta next Saturday, January 6.

The initiative starts at 6.30 PM and is expected to last approximately four hours.

Besides, there will be a display of ceramic works by Adolfo Mendonça, who, on the same day, will conduct a modelling clay workshop for children between 2 and 5 PM; participation is free.

The registrations for the children's workshop and the participation in the reading marathon should be made through the telephone number 295 240 800 or at email address [email protected].

The programme also includes the participation of Terceira Island Film Club, which will present the film "Moby Dick," directed by John Huston, featuring Gregory Peck as the leading character. The event will be held at the film room of Recreio dos Artistas Philharmonic Society at 6 PM.

The Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade Secondary School is also participating in this initiative, providing the bar service during the reading session.

This is the 22nd marathon that takes place at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the third year that a parallel reading session of the work in Portuguese takes places at the Azorean Whaleman Gallery. The initiative also involves the emigrant community on the east coast of the States United.

The reading of this iconic novel by Herman Melville is held under the collaboration between the Portuguese Consulate in New Bedford and that museum. The latter presented in 2016 the exhibition "Oásis | Wildlife Photography by Nuno Sá," currently stored at the Angra do Heroísmo Museum. The opening of this exhibition was part of the event's 20th edition.

The first edition of "Moby Dick" dates back to 1851. The book narrates the voyage of the whaler "Pequod" and the adventures of her crew, led by a captain whose ultimate goal is to destroy a mythical white whale that, in a previous confrontation, bit off his leg.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
