Angra do Heroísmo Museum presents "Oásis by Nuno Sá" at New Bedford Whaling Museum

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, presents the exhibition "Oásis by Nuno Sá | Wildlife Photography" at the New Bedford Whaling Museum from January to June 2016.

Held under a partnership with this US institution, the initiative aims to strengthen the ties between the Azores and the Azorean community residing on the East coast of the United States.

The exhibition consists of 24 large-format underwater photographs that depict the splendour, the eeriness and the beauty of the multiple creatures inhabiting the immensity of the Azorean sea, making it an unlikely oasis that few have the opportunity to see.

The exhibition was open to the public at the Chapter Room of Angra do Heroísmo Museum and at Terceira Forum from June to October 2014. It was then stored at this museum, which promoted its display throughout the archipelago and abroad due to the documentary and artistic relevance of this exhibition for the tourism promotion of the Azores.

The exhibition will open at the New Bedford Whaling Museum on January. The opening will be attended by the Director of Angra do Heroísmo Museum, Jorge Paulus Bruno, and the author, Nuno Sá. It reaffirms the maritime connection between two communities that played a key role in the history of whaling communities since many Azoreans were part of the crews of US whaler factories that journeyed the archipelago in the 18th and 19th centuries in search for those who Melville considered to be "the best whale hunters."

In order to honour the role of the Portuguese people and, in particular, of the Azoreans in the whaling industry, the New Bedford Museum promotes, under the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the public reading of "Moby Dick," a mini marathon where the English version of this work will be presented. The event will be attended by the director of Angra do Heroísmo Museum.

Nuno Sá is a professional photographer who specialises in marine wildlife. He has been distinguished in major international nature photography exhibitions and his photographs are in display at some the most important natural history museums, including the London Natural History Museum and Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
