Angra do Heroísmo Museum opens vestry of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church to the public

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, opens the vestry of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church to the public, after completion of the restoration work, next Saturday, March 17, at 3 PM.

These works were carried out by technicians from the Mobile and Intangible and Archaeological Heritage Department of the Regional Directorate for Culture. The intervention covered a coffered ceiling in gilded and polychrome wood with the coat of arms of Saint Francis in the middle, several cabinets and a coffer made from Brazilian rosewood, which is attributed to Manoel de Almeyda. This piece of furniture contains a crucifix with an ivory Christ of Indo-Portuguese origin and four reliquary arms.

Moreover, the vestry also contains a stone fountain dating from 1722 flanked by solomonic columns with high relief carving works.

The opening programme includes a lecture on the "Conservation and restoration of movable and immovable assets of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church" to be delivered by Paula Romão, a member of the Mobile and Intangible and Archaeological Heritage Department of the Regional Directorate for Culture. The event will be followed by a guided tour and a concert featuring Orest Grytsiouk and Gustaaf van Manen, who will performs works by Johann Sebastian Bach for cello and harpsichord.

This initiative takes place in the context of the celebrations of the European Year of Cultural Heritage; admission is free.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
