School Park is "reference" programme in environmental education for children and young people, says Marta Guerreiro

The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism highlighted today the School Park as a "reference" programme in the promotion of environmental education. In this regard, she highlighted that the initiative promoted more than 1,000 activities in the 2017/2018 school year, namely the "park goes to school" or the "school goes to protected areas." Both involved more than 21 thousand participants.

"The Government of the Azores has developed, implemented and promoted a strategy based on the importance of environmental education as a starting point for the dissemination and exchange of information about our vast and rich natural heritage, which a vital part of our identity," said Marta Guerreiro.

The Secretary for the Environment spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the book "O incompreendido Tubarão João" (The Misunderstood Shark). The work was prepared under the School Park programme by Paula Vieira and Alejandro Vila, collaborators of Porto Pim Aquarium - Live Fish Station.

"This book was born from the need to create a resource that, in a playful, informal and captivating way, motivates young people to learn about the environment and the conservation of the marine biodiversity of our Region. It also addresses pollution threats, focusing on plastics as one of the main problems," said Marta Guerreiro.

The dissemination of book has already been 250 students and more than thirty teachers, through reading activities carried out in more than 15 sessions promoted by the Porto Pim Aquarium.

"This is another educational resource that will be available to the public in general and may be purchased at various Azores Environmental Centres, especially those dedicated to the sea," said the Regional Secretary.
