Measures to promote energy efficiency are a priority, says Marta Guerreiro

he Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stated that the Regional Government will implement a series of measures to promote energy efficiency that are in line with the European strategy. They are based on economic rationality and the sustainable development of the archipelago.

Marta Guerreiro spoke Monday at the end of the 1st Meeting with Energy Efficiency. She stressed that the Government "will develop mechanisms and incentive systems for investment in the field of renewable energy and practices that will lead to greater energy efficiency in the region's strategic sectors."

"The Government will also develop and implement programmes to promote the adoption of systems, based on renewable energy and associated with innovative technological solutions. The latter are intended to optimise energy consumption through the use of energy-efficient equipment and mechanisms that will increase consumption in periods when primary energy is from renewable sources," stressed the Regional Secretary.

In her speech, Marta Guerreiro ensured that making the Azores an international reference with the awarding of the classification of innovative and energy sustainable region is a priority goal. It will lead to the use of efficient energy produced from renewable sources by including them in a charging station network, managed by a smart platform that connects users, operators, vehicles and infrastructures.

The Secretary for Energy stressed that these meetings aim to provide essential information to citizens towards an active behaviour that will enhance the sustainability of the Azores.

"Our role, as Regional Government, is to help following this path and, therefore, we consider that these awareness-raising actions in the energy sector are key to clarifying the Azoreans and turn them into key players in promoting energy efficiency," said the government official.

This 1st Meeting with Energy Efficiency focused on several topics, such as industry, agriculture, forestry and fishing. The next meetings are expected to address issues, namely electric mobility, services, public buildings and public lighting, with the aim of raising awareness on energy efficiency and promoting a low carbon economy in the Azores.
