Marta Guerreiro says Pineapple Festival will promote and disseminate the history of this relevant crop

The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stressed that the Pineapple Festival will promote and disseminate the history of this “relevant” culture that is so much alive in the village of Fajã de Baixo, municipality of Ponta Delgada, “already known as the capital of the Azores pineapple."

Marta Guerreiro spoke Saturday at the opening session of the second edition of the event, which has, once again, the support of the Regional Government. On the occasion, she stressed that “it will be two days full of experiences focused on the importance of this fruit, featuring showcookings, lectures and moments of leisure that will surely be a success."

"This is, in fact, an event that will boost pineapple production and the products made from this fruit, demonstrating that it is possible to promote a cultural, gastronomic and recreational experience," said the government official.

In her speech, the Regional Secretary highlighted the Pineapple Culture Interpretation Centre, which has been installed in the village's historic centre since 2016. According to her, it "responds to the need of establishing the historical memory of this activity and promoting its unique features for tourist purposes."

“A space that is part of the two dozen Environmental Centres located throughout the Region and that tells us the history of pineapple cultivation in an attractive way,” said the Regional Secretary. With this space, “the Regional Government has, once again, created the conditions for the promotion and dissemination of our values and traditions.”

The Secretary for the Environment stated that “all visitors, from local to tourists, can embark on a journey through the history of pineapple. They will also have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the facts and the technological developments that have led to the production of the "best pineapple in the world" as well as with the stages of the pineapple production cycle, the business fabric that characterised its economy, historical figures and gastronomy, among other aspects."

For Marta Guerreiro, the Centre represents another form of “promotion and dissemination that involves the participation of everyone, evidencing that, with pride and dedication, we have managed to take the name of the Azores, their people and their products even further.”
